Abstract

Context/Background: Caesarean sections without clinical indication have warranted the World Health Organization (WHO) and Government agencies to create strategies for their control and Robson Ten Group classification is one of them which classify CSs in ten groups according to different categories of the pregnancy. Aims/Objectives: To assess the trends in Caesarean Section rates in women attending tertiary care hospital using Robson’s classification. Methodology: A record based study was conducted for a period of one year where the data of 2560 women who delivered during the study period was used to assess trends in Caesarean Section rates by classifying them into ten groups by Robson classification. Calculations were done as per Robson’s classification manual. The Caesarean Section rates were calculated as the ratio of caesarean deliveries to total deliveries. Results: Maximum numbers of deliveries were conducted among Group 1(31.7%) followed by Group 3 (25.5%) and Group 5 (17.5%) whereas Group 9 (100%) followed by Group 5 (97%) and Group 2 (90%) were the largest contributor to the overall Caesarean Section rates. Conclusions: Every effort should be made to provide caesarean section to women in need, rather than striving to achieve a specific rate and Robson’s classification is a step forward in this direction.
