Abstract

Background and Objective: Monofilament sutures, while potentially pricier to manufacture, can yield cost savings by reducing complications and procedure durations, whereas polyfilament sutures, typically cheaper, may necessitate extra handling precautions to prevent infections. The aim of the study was to compare the outcome of absorbable suture Monocryl 3-0 and non-absorbable suture Prolene 3-0 in abdominal skin closure during caesarean section. Method: The prospective, comparative study conducted at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Sri Amritsar, after the approval by the institutional ethical committee. Detailed history was recorded including demographic details, dietary , antenatal history, gynaecological , and past medical/surgical history. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups with each group containing 75 patients each. Results: The mean age of patients was 27.5 ± 3.828 years. Prolene sutures were used in patients with mean age of 27.61 ± 3.883, while Monocryl sutures were used in those with a mean age of 27.40 ± 3.795. Majority (18.7%) of patients with Prolene sutures scored 7 for total scar assessment, followed by 8 (9.3%). Mean total scar score for Prolene sutures was 6.142 ± 3.113. Among those with Monocryl sutures, 8% failed to follow up. More complications were observed in Monocryl sutures when compared to Prolene sutures. Conclusion: Conversely, the Prolene group demonstrated superior wound health on days 5 and 10, with fewer instances of infection and induration. Scar scores were comparable between both groups.
