- INCIDENCE OF ASSOCIATED SYSTEMIC ANOMALIES IN FOETUSES WITH NEURAL TUBE DEFECT IN UTTARAKHAND POPULATION

Abstract

Background: Females in Uttarakhand were from hilly area, illiterate, agricultural labors are unable to visit for regular antenatal checkups and did not get ultrasound study done and unable to take folic acid and iron. Might cause, Anencephaly which is a lethal neural tube defect which is due to the defective closure of rostral pore of neural tube. more than 50% of cases it is associated with other systemic anomalies. The study aims to identify anencephaly in Uttarakhand population. Along with incidence with associated systemic anomalies, maternal age, birth order and sex of the fetus Materials and Methods: It is a study on 21 anencephaly fetuses conducted in the Department of Anatomy for two years, Gross, autopsy and histological reading are done. Results: Out of 21 cases, 11 anencephalic cases showed presence of systemic anomalies, maximum female foetus associated with skeletal anomalies meningomyelocele, gastrointestinal anomalies followed by polycystic kidney disease mainly observed in primigravida of 19 to 38 years. Conclusion: Parenteral counseling and antenatal visits, routine test and USG must be advised and folic acid supplement must be provided to pregnant female.
